Cracks on Wall

Estimated reading: 3 minutes

Cracks in walls can be repaired in a variety of methods, including the following:

  1. Spackling: This is a quick and easy way to fill small cracks on walls. Simply apply spackling paste to the crack with a putty knife, smooth it out, and let it dry. Once dry, the spackling can be sanded, painted, or wallpapered over.

  2. Caulking: This method is best for small cracks that are located in areas where moisture is present, such as around windows or in bathrooms. Caulk is applied to the crack with a caulk gun and smoothed out with a finger or a caulk smoothing tool. Once dry, it can be painted over.

  3. Drywall tape and joint compound: For larger cracks, drywall tape and joint compound can be used to cover and repair the crack. First, apply a thin layer of joint compound over the crack, then press drywall tape onto the compound. Repeat this process until the crack is filled and the repair is flush with the wall. Once dry, the repair can be sanded, painted, or wallpapered over.

  4. Drywall patching: For larger holes and cracks, drywall patching can be done by cutting a piece of drywall to size and attaching it to the existing wall with drywall screws or joint compound. Once dry, the patch can be sanded, painted, or wallpapered over.

  5. Epoxy injection: This method is used for larger cracks, typically those over 1/4 inch wide, that are caused by foundation movement or settling. Epoxy is injected into the crack under pressure, which fills the crack and bonds the two sides of the wall together. This method is best performed by a professional.

  6. Concrete patching: If the crack is in a concrete wall or foundation, a concrete patching compound can be used to repair it. The compound is mixed with water, applied to the crack, and smoothed out. Once dry, it can be painted over.

  7. Steel mesh and stucco: This method is used for large cracks in stucco walls. A steel mesh is applied to the crack, and then a stucco patch is applied over the mesh. Once dry, the stucco can be painted or textured to match the existing wall.

  8. Brick and mortar repair: If the crack is in a brick wall, a professional mason can repair the crack by removing the damaged brick and replacing it with a new one, then tuckpointing the area with new mortar. This will restore the structural integrity of the wall and also improve its appearance.
